When you think of Costa Rica, what comes to mind first? Are you thinking of a tropical land full of natural beauty and national parks? You think of exotic wildlife, waterfalls, and volcanoes. You may remember Costa Rica is the home of the ecotourism business.
There are also adventures. Rafting, zip-lining, and many more activities to swallow your teeth. But where are the best places to visit in Costa Rica? If you have a short time, where are you going?
In a country full of incredible sites, what are the things that a tourist should not approve of? Here are the top 10 most unapproachable places to visit in Costa Rica.
San Jose
San Jose is the colorful, chaotic capital of Costa Rica. It is also home to one in five Costa Ricans living in and around the capital.
In recent years, San Jose has also been cleaned, not the hell represented by the guidebooks of the 1990s and early 2000s. The city has a rich culinary and entertainment scene, neighborhoods, and wonderful museums and galleries.
Chirripo
At 3,820 m (12,532 ft), Zero Chiripo is the highest mountain in Costa Rica. It's an attempt to set it up here.
"Attempt" means a full day's hike, with visitors spending the night 400 meters below the peak, pushing the final push up, and then back throughout the day. It's not for the faint of heart. But for those who try, the reward is spectacular. The summit is one of the few places in the world where you can see the weather - the Pacific and the Atlantic (Caribbean) oceans simultaneously.
If you go there before sunrise and watch the sunrise, you will know why this place is not approved.
Arenal Volcano
Arenal is the perfect cone-shaped volcano. It is still active, with its last major eruption in 1968 and minor eruptions since then.
This part of Costa Rica is not just an unacceptable volcano, this part of Costa Rica is the adventure capital of Central America. The city of La Fortuna sits at the foot of the Arenal and from here you can do anything if you like adventurous activities.
Includes zip-lining, river rowing, cave, jungle climbing, rappelling, and more. You can then soak up the volcanic hot springs at any of the spas around you.
Nicoya Peninsula
The Osa Peninsula is a nature lover and the Nicoya Peninsula attracts coastal lovers. From Tamarindo to Carbo Blanco and across the Montessori to the Gulf, the peninsula offers the desolate beaches of Di Nicoya, large waves, hidden grasslands, and tropical islands. Tamarindo is an archeological tourist city full of restaurants and bars. Great for Samara families, close to Playa Carrillo, many call Costa Rica's most attractive beach.
Looking for an empty surf? Try San Miguel or Coyote. Looking for a real surf village? That's Santa Teresa. Montezuma gives a hippie shock. Here you will find a beach community that suits your personality.
Pacuare River
The Rio Pacquiao River is one of the top five rivers in the world. The river flows into the Caribbean Sea about 120 km from the Talamanca Mountains.
It runs through the virgin forest. There one can still see the Kobekar aboriginal shacks on the bank and if you are lucky a big cat. Most lodges are accessible only from the ravine - the nearest road is miles away - the only way to the river or out. A few nights at the Pacquiao River lodge surrounded by rainforests will take Indiana Jones to a more touristy spot.
Rio Celeste
There are few places like Rio Celeste in the Tenorio Volcano National Park. It's the color you see.
Bright turquoise water flowing through a wonderful waterfall surrounded by hot springs in the middle of a rainforest. Turquoise comes from volcanic minerals and makes every Instagram user want to crash and post.
